The Lancaster Environment Lecture 2024 - Caroline Lucas: Another England Is Possible in conversation with Edward Simpson

By Lancaster Litfest

In partnership with Lancaster University, Litfest is delighted to welcome leading environmental campaigner and Britain’s only Green MP, Caroline Lucas, to give the 2024 Lancaster Environment Lecture.

First elected to Parliament in 2010, her passionately reasoned and incisive interventions in the House of Commons have held power to account for fourteen years, keeping environmental issues and social justice firmly in public view.

In her 2024 lecture, drawing on her new book Another England, Caroline Lucas will delve deep into our literary heritage to explore what England’s progressive spirit can teach us about the most pressing issues of our time: whether the toxic legacy of Empire, the struggle for constitutional reform and, above all, the accelerating climate emergency, In a bid to reclaim Englishness from the cheerleaders for exceptionalism and imperial nostalgia, she sketches out alternative stories of England – these put the Chartists and the Levellers in their rightful places alongside Nelson and Churchill, and draw on the medieval writers and Romantic poets who reflect a more sustainable relationship with the natural world. They include the diverse voices exploring our shared challenges of identity and equality today. It is an inspired and reasoned vision that everyone can embrace to build a greener, fairer future.

Caroline Lucas is the MP for Brighton Pavilion, and is the UK’s first Green Party MP. Elected to parliament in 2010, she also served as leader of the Green Party of England and Wales from 2008 to 2012, and co-leader from 2016 to 2018. She was previously a Member of the European Parliament for 10 years. She holds a PhD in English Literature. Find her on X @CarolineLucas
