Discerning the truth about the cause of the Great Schism begins by understanding what happened in Constantinople, in the 9th century, at the Eighth Oecumenical Council and afterwards. Attended by all the patriarchates, including Rome, and accepted and ratified in Rome by Pope John VIII, this Council condemned the addition of the Filioque to the Creed. Now, in English for the first time, we have the Acts of the Council and every sincere seeker can read for himself what the Church in Council not only declared and taught but also how it understood the place and role of the Pope of Rome.
