Democratizing Social Impact through Participatory Grantmaking
By Social Impact World
Key takeaways attendees will walk away with from this webinar:
- Practical tools for building a participatory grantmaking model within your own company or organization
- A clear understanding of the impact of this type of program versus traditional grantmaking within a corporate environment for both community partners and employees
- Learnings from a real-world case study to advise companies considering this model on the challenges and opportunities of this philanthropic model
Overview
A company decides to provide grants to communities, but what is their process for doing so? Whose voice do we center and prioritize in the decision-making process? A participatory grantmaking model contends with these questions - calling in the voices and experiences of the communities you hope to impact, reminding those constituents that they deserve to be centered in the decisions concerning the allocation of money and resources which directly impact them.
The participatory grantmaking framework is an emerging field in philanthropy that has led to an increase in funders exploring how to incorporate this practice into their funding models, however, it is not a form of grantmaking that is often seen in the corporate sector.
Based on the successful 2021 launch of a new participatory grantmaking program of Mailchimp’s Corporate Citizenship team, The Forward Project awarded over $750,000 in grants to further the visions of social entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations in the Atlanta area. The project was designed and implemented in collaboration with Mailchimp (a subsidiary of Intuit), and consulting firms Purpose Possible and Indwell Collective. Inspired by the success of this project, Susannah Darrow, of Purpose Possible, and Tiffany Curtis, of Indwell Collaborative, will provide an in-depth look at how they worked with the corporate social responsibility team to design, implement and evaluate this program over the past two years. We will share learnings from the process exploring how the impact for grantees differs from more traditional grantmaking programs.
