El Jardin, Creating the Modern Mediterranean Villa traces the origins of one of South Florida’s oldest estates and the first to claim a Modern Mediterranean identity. Archival and contemporary photographs illustrate essays on the opening days of El Jardin in Coconut Grove at the dawn of the 20th century with the arrival of the Bindley family, architect Richard Kiehnel and builder John Orr through to its current life as Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart. From its early history through the events of the 20th and into the 21st century, the estate represents generations of care, contemporary conservation measures and ongoing stewardship.

About the Authors
IRIS GUZMAN KOLAYA is a freelance writer and researcher based in Miami, Florida. A former print and broadcast journalist, she currently specializes in local history, bringing to life stories from South Florida’s rich heritage. Follow her on Instagram @305historian
JOANNA LOMBARD is a practicing architect and professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. She is co-author with Beth Dunlop of the Great Houses of Florida and with Rocco Ceo, Historic Landscapes of Florida.
In Conversation with JOEL HOFFMAN, who is Executive Director/CEO of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. In this role, he has broadened Vizcaya’s relevance as a cultural and environmental resource through expanded interpretation and community programming, while overseeing the estate’s ongoing conservation and rehabilitation.
