Topic: How to Spot Fake Candidates Before They Become Your Next Security Risk

When every CV looks perfect, identifying the right talent is only the beginning. The next challenge is establishing whether the person behind the application is genuine, and whether their skills match what they present. This trust problem is emerging across recruitment: fabricated experience, AI-assisted interview answers, deepfake identities and phishing candidates who use applications or portfolio links to target recruiters. At scale, these risks place new demands on teams already working under pressure.

For HR and Talent Acquisition leaders, failing to address these gaps can mean costly mis-hires, compromised company data and recruiter time diverted from genuine applicants. Yet adding checks indiscriminately can slow decisions, increase candidate drop-off and undermine the experience the hiring model was designed to improve. The opportunity is to embed proportionate verification into that model: using AI to flag inconsistencies and support identity checks, practical assessments to demonstrate capability, and clear collaboration with security teams. Getting this right creates stronger evidence for hiring decisions, protects candidate trust and frees recruiters to focus on people and potential.
