During this webinar, participants will explore what it means to foster belonging for neurodiverse youth and discuss ways to adapt garden‑based programs to better meet participants’ needs. We'll begin with an overview of the core principles of belonging, then build on that foundation to examine how these ideas can be applied to support neurodiverse youth in garden settings. Through conversations around language considerations, practical tools and strategies, and common barriers within garden spaces, participants will gain resources and insights to support them in adapting their programs. Fostering belonging for neurodiverse youth is a complex and evolving topic! By learning alongside fellow professionals, we can strengthen the experiences we offer and leave with actionable strategies to bring back to our organizations.

My name is Katie (she/her), and I am the Youth Programs Director at the Youth Garden Project (YGP) in Moab, Utah. My journey with garden-based education began two years ago when I joined the YGP team. While I am relatively new to garden-based learning, I have extensive experience in environmental education — particularly in fostering belonging for neurodiverse communities, culturally responsive practices, and applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning. It has been powerful to witness the intersection of accessibility, belonging, and food justice that can occur in garden-based spaces, and I am grateful to be a part of this community!
