The PIE Chat Live - Bas Kremer Hovinga, Founder & Head of Product, Joinby
By The PIE
The importance of creating a sense of community and belonging for international students is well-understood and programmed into most arrival and orientation programmes, but can institutions be even more effective and begin that process earlier and offshore?
In this PIE Chat Live we will be talking to Bas Kremer Hovinga, Founder and Head of Product at Joinby, the online peer-to-peer platform which builds pre-arrival communities of international students as they prepare to study overseas.
Bas will explain the origins and purpose of Joinby, citing examples of how they help their institutional partners in Belgium and the Netherlands engage with their offer-holders to create a community before they have even arrived on campus. One example up for discussion is Joinby’s ‘buddy matching’ app, developed alongside Antwerp’s Karel de Grote Hogeschool University of Applied Sciences.
The platform allows incoming international students to be matched with an experienced international student, based upon shared interests, who can guide them through their student journey.
Peer-to-peer and digital ambassador schemes are not new, but they are largely concerned with student ‘conversion’. Joinby deploys the technology differently to help student prepare for their arrival on campus by disseminating important information, enabling students to connect, interact and feel part of a community – thereby reducing melt or attrition.
Join us to hear about Joinby’s mission and how it helps its partners improve the experience for their international students.
