Improve your watercolor, have a couple of hours fun painting along with Tim Wilmot, and...get a critique!

Join me for my our next workshop - The Country Gate! It is a very classic English countryside scene that will look great in watercolor.  This scene has a lovely wooden gate in the foreground and a beautiful, bright field behind it.  Now what could be a focal point here?  That purple tree in the background or maybe we can introduce some simple figures walking in the field?

We will face a few challenges with this painting.  One challenge is getting the gate to look correct.  The wooden bars must follow the right perspective so they look like they are sitting on the path.  We need to get it symmetrical and also paint all those slats with the same width.

Another challenge is the green field.  It is easy to make a field look like a flat green block.  Get your bright greens ready for this part.  And then in the immediate foreground, that path leading to the gate, and getting the textures of the surface correct.  I hope you will join me!

Getting the perspective of the wooden gate right.  The bars need to follow the correct lines so the gate looks like it is standing firmly on the path.

Mixing the greens for the big field.  We want to use different shades like spring green and yellow ochre so the grass does not look like a flat green block.

Painting the dark purple tree in the middle?  It is very dark, so we must be careful not to make it look like a big hole.  We need to keep some light on the edges to show its shape.

Creating the texture of the path in the foreground.  We will use some dry brush marks to show the stones and the rough ground.

Balancing the dark trees on the left with the bright sky.  We want the trees to frame the view without taking over the whole painting.

Keeping the colors fresh and clean.  It is a bright day, so we want the watercolor to look light and full of sunshine.

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level. It is a demonstration in Watercolor. I go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using. The commentary is in English, and I speak slowly for any attendees where English is not your first language.

All you need to watch and take part is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary.  Crowdcast is not like Zoom. Nobody can see you or hear you.  You just see and hear me and it's really EASY!

What you will need (apart from paper and water)

A large and medium size mop brush. Small brush for detail work. A small flat brush might be used.

Your normal palette of colours (I mainly use, neutral tint, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, viridian green, spring green (or a bright green!), cobalt green, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, lavender, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, light red and a cadmium yellow, white paint for highlights.  I also sometimes use quinacridone gold). You don't need to use these colours.  Please don't buy anything special for this workshop.  Just use your usual things!
