Ensuring quality of education through curriculum design is complex. There are lots of elements to consider: ambition, intent, components, sequencing, end points, assessment - the list goes on.
Getting it right is crucial to make sure we give every student - whether they be SEND, EAL, disadvantaged, etc - equal access to ensure you maximize success in KS3, KS4, KS5 and life beyond.
But with such complexity comes the risk that these terms can be misinterpreted and misapplied.
Join us to learn:
- Why it’s so important that we get key aspects of curriculum design right such as intent, knowledge, sequencing and assessment
- Updates from latest inspection handbook and what that means for your work
- Misconceptions about knowledge, pedagogy, assessment and how you should really think about them
- What they look like when done badly and done well
- Key questions to ask yourself when designing a curriculum for success
- Key questions to ask yourself when reviewing the impact of your curriculum
- How you can use curriculum documents to facilitate powerful conversations about improvement when students are not learning and remembering knowledge
- How this relates to the forgetting curve and assessment
- How to monitor how well formative assessment is being used
- Key research to drawn upon to inform your work around each aspect
- Further reading you should do to improve your curriculum leadership of different subjects
Meet the speaker and school
- Linda Emmett is a former HMI and the Associate Headteacher and Little Lever School
- Having converted to an academy in 2016, Little lever was judged Requires Improvement in 2018. Described by Linda as “broken and very challenging” at that time.
- Now there has been a sea change in how the school runs. In March 2022, the school was judged Good: “Leaders have designed an ambitious curriculum”. All this was done “without mentioning Ofsted once”.
- Read more about their curriculum development strengths and areas for improvement in the report here
- Early signs are that their work is having the impact they hoped form with very positive (albeit as yet unverified) P8 outcomes.
- As an HMI Linda has conducted over 40 inspections including: Section 8’s in good and outstanding schools, Section 8’s Special Measures and Serious Weaknesses schools and Section 5’s.
Who is this for?
- Senior leaders, who are in an inspection window and either want to better understand what we mean by intent, components, sequencing and end points OR access a resource that helps them improve their team’s understanding of them so they can avoid their misapplication and lay the foundation for powerful curriculum conversations after teaching the content
- Subject leaders, who are in an inspection window and either want to better understand what we mean by intent, components, sequencing and end points OR access a resource that helps them improve their team’s understanding of them so they can avoid their misapplication and lay the foundation for powerful curriculum conversations after teaching the content
Resources you will be able to access after this session include:
- Subject leader prompt questions for reviewing the curriculum
- Subject specific aids to support memory and retention
- Examples of curriculum planning documents from different subjects
This session is available to all live for free.
It will be available on demand (with resources) to members of the Curriculum Thinkers Community only.
