Deferred, waitlisted and denied are three different situations. Most families treat them as three grades of the same bad news, and it costs them a month.

Early decisions land this month. Before that portal opens, know what the words actually mean inside the office that sent them.

I spent two decades in college admissions and enrollment management, up to the vice-president level. I have written these letters, defended these decisions in committee, and built the models that produced them. Now I work for families instead of institutions.

What each decision actually signals, and which ones still have moves in them

The four reasons strong students get deferred, and why only one is about the student

How to look up any college's real waitlist odds in two minutes

What to do in the first 48 hours, and the four things not to do

How to write a letter of continued interest that changes an outcome

How to ask financial aid for a second look: a separate door, and a far more productive one

Everyone who registers gets a two-page take-home sheet with the letter skeleton, the aid request template, and a 30-day calendar, whether or not you attend live. The session is recorded and sent to all registrants.

Bring the actual wording of your decision letter. I can usually tell you what it means.
