Post-lineage yoga in a nutshell

By Theo Wildcroft

This 3-part webinar will be a thorough introduction to my research into the concept of post-lineage yoga. This term sums up my many years of investigating how yoga is taught – in the pre-modern era in South Asia, in yoga’s modern renaissance, and across the world today. Post-lineage yoga is more than just academic terminology. In my many conversations with yoga teachers during and since my PhD, it has become a way of helping all of understand the risks and rewards, the fears and the tensions, of yoga teaching communities today.
• In week one, we will set the scene with the history of yoga teaching and the crisis of authority in modern transnational yoga.
• In week two, we will look at main features of post-lineage yoga, and its risks and rewards.
• In week three, we will look forwards to current issues and suggestions for best practices.
This course is suitable for anyone who wants to better understand why we teach the way we do, and as such is appropriate for all yoga teachers, yoga therapists, yoga teacher trainers and trainees, but also teachers of other movement and spiritual practices and anyone who is fascinated by the history of teaching yoga.
This course will not tell you how yoga should be taught. Instead, we will discuss and debate the ways we balance authority and authenticity, history and tradition, science and intuition, commerce and service, in the teaching of yoga. You can expect a mix of presentations, group discussion and pop quizzes, and mini practice sessions and explorations. All practices will be fully accessible and optional. Post-course reading and further references will be available. This course is certificated and can be used for 9 hours of continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance.
