Antonio Michael Downing - Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming
By TPL Programs
Raised by his indomitable grandmother in the lush rainforest of southern Trinidad, Antonio Michael Downing's world is turned upside down when his grandmother dies.
At age 11, he is sent to Canada to live with his stern, evangelical Aunt Joan, in Wabigoon, a tiny northern Ontario community where he and his older brother are the only Black children in the town.
In this wilderness, he begins his journey as an immigrant minority, using music and performance to dramatically transform himself.
Antonio Michael's book, Saga Boy, is a startling mash-up of memories, lyrics and mythology told in gripping, lyrical prose.
Richly evocative, Saga Boy is a heart-wrenching but uplifting story of a lonely immigrant boy who overcomes adversity and abandonment to reclaim his Black identity and embrace a rich heritage.
Antonio Michael will be in conversation with Sean Mauricette, an award-winning motivational speaker, actor, and entertainer.
This program celebrates Juneteenth and will be recorded and available for replay at the same link.
Place a hold on Antonio Michael's book, Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming.
