Dr. Carl Hart: Drug Use for Grown-Ups

In his controversial new book, Drug Use for Grown-Ups Columbia University professor of psychology and neuroscience, Dr. Carl Hart, takes a long hard look at supposed ‘recreational drugs’ and the ongoing criminalization of drug use as a means to reinforce structural racism. Dr. Hart began his research during the ‘crack epidemic’ and ran in line with the massively well-funded research arm of the American war on drugs. However, Dr. Hart quickly realized much of the empirical data was dismissed in favour of stoking fear, outrage and reinforcing the prison pipeline.
In his book, Dr. Hart shares clinical research alongside his personal experience as an admitted drug user with the intention to de-vilify concepts around ‘typical drug users’ in order to change minds and save lives.

Civil Forum: Drug Use for Grownups
This event has a Civil Forum that will begin at 6:00 and run until 6:30pm, just prior to the main event (which begins at 7pm). Note that the Civil Forum for Drug Use for Grownups is a separate event and requires a separate registration from the main event.
In this Civil Forum, a moderator will speak directly to you, the audience, providing background and context relating to the issues that are part of Carl Hart’s book, Drug Use for Grownups. Additionally, your opinions, thoughts and experiences will be a critical part of engaging with the topic and understanding the background before you attend the main event. Come to participate, to listen and learn, come to teach other audience members about your own experience, education or expertise on the topic.
This Civil Forum is drop-in but the video presentation will begin at around 6pm. There will be a 30 minute break between the end of this Civil Forum and the start of the main event at 7pm.
