About
Educators Scott Morrison, Ph.D., and Katie Baker, Ed.D. will provide a brief overview of current research on the academic, social, and emotional benefits of outdoor education broadly and on garden-based education in particular; share five core routines to structure and guide lessons outside; and offer examples of K-8 math lessons that could be taught in gardens or other outdoor environments.
Presenters
Scott Morrison, Ph.D. was a 6th grade teacher in Blowing Rock, NC for 11 years, which is where he learned to teach outside and use gardens as contexts for learning. As a teacher educator at Elon University, he is the coordinator of the environmental education minor and teaches courses on environmental education, garden-based learning, and nature awareness. In 2016, he created the forest classroom at Loy Farm so that his students could become fully immersed in the philosophy and practices of forest school. He also has service-learning partnerships with local elementary schools where he and his students co-facilitate after-school garden clubs. Scott is passionate about everyday environmental education, or the ways that any teacher can integrate environmental issues into their curriculum or use nature and the community as a context for learning on a daily basis.
Katie Baker, Ed.D. is an Associate Professor at Elon University where she supports prospective teachers in their mathematics education coursework and instruction. Prior to Elon, she was a 4th and 5th grade classroom teacher and an elementary math lead teacher. She collaborates with prospective teachers, practicing teachers, and teacher educators to explore students’ mathematical thinking and how to use that thinking in instructional decision-making. She especially enjoys teaching and learning mathematics outside.
