It was the war to end all wars and one of the bloodiest and cruellest conflicts in history.

A poignant memento of those nightmare years ended up in the hands of author Mark Scott – a notebook that had been carried through the trenches by his great grandfather, Jimmy Scott, and found nestled in the pocket of his uniform. In it was a list of names, written with the tiny pencil still attached to the fragile cover.

This family heirloom inspired Mark to discover the stories of these men who gave their all in the Great War.

In this talk, Mark will discuss his remarkable connection to the story of the Unknown Warrior. He will explain how previously unearthed documents reveal a more complete account, including what happened to the bodies of those unidentified soldiers not selected for burial in Westminster Abbey in 1920, but who, like thousands of others, are ‘Known Unto God’.

Mark Scott is the author of two recent publications. The first, ‘The Man Who Shot The Great War’, was written after working as a research consultant on the DoubleBand Films / BBC film documentary of the same name. The second is ‘Among the Kings’. He previously taught photography at Queen’s University Belfast.
