Privacy Law Reforms

By TPL Innovation

Canada's privacy laws are uniformly agreed to be sorely in need of modernization. Over the past year there has been considerable discussion--if not progress--towards this goal. There have been consultations regarding the Privacy Act (our federal public sector law); a new bill, C-11, tabled to replace the federal private sector act, PIPEDA; and a really interesting white paper issued by the province of Ontario discussing goals for a "made in Ontario" private sector privacy law. This session will discuss the gaps in the current legislative regime, the changes we need, and why it matters from a public interest perspective.
This program takes place on Data Privacy Day, a dedicated day that highlights the impact technology is having on our privacy rights and underlines the importance of valuing and protecting personal information.
