Ethics, Safety, and Abuse in Psychedelic Medicine

As psychedelic medicine becomes more mainstream, we must ensure that all who participate in healing therapeutic sessions, both above ground and in ceremonial or underground therapeutic settings, are safe and accessible to all. Join Chacruna and mental health experts and activists, Allison Feduccia, PhD, Vilmarie Fraguada Narloch, PsyD, Kylea Taylor, MS, LMFT, and Emma Knighton, MA, LMHC, to discuss topics around standards of care and accountability for practitioners in the psychedelic-therapy space, addressing issues of power, hierarchy, and abuse. We hope this forum will help therapists and ceremonial leaders understand the need of doing their "own work", and their own responsibility in keeping people safe, as well strengthen a culture of open conversation in the field around these delicate issues for everyone.

📷Allison Feduccia, PhD is a neuropharmacologist, psychedelic researcher, and a builder of virtual and in-person communities. She is the Co-Founder of Psychedelic.Support and Project New Day. In these roles, Allison facilitates the spreading of evidence-based knowledge, connection to resources, and strategies for individuals to maximize the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics through safe and responsible practices. She began researching MDMA in 2004 and has worked on studies of psychedelics and mental health conditions at universities, NIH, and MAPS.

📷Vilmarie Fraguada Narloch, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist in Chicago, Illinois, focusing on integrated treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and psychedelic-assisted therapy. She is an activist working to end the War on Drugs and advocates for science and reality-based drug education and harm reduction approaches for all. She approaches her work from a harm reductionist and humanistic lens, focusing on the individual needs of the person, group, or community. Vilmarie received a certificate in psychedelic therapies and research from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2018. She is the director of Drug Education at Students for Sensible Drug Policy and co-founder and director at Sana Healing Collective.

📷Kylea Taylor, M.S., LMFT is a California licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC #34901 who has been thinking, writing, and teaching about ethics for almost three decades. She has developed and teaches InnerEthics™ in psychedelic psychotherapy trainings. InnerEthics™ is a relational, self-compassionate approach to ethical self-reflection and right relationship with clients. Kylea started studying with Stanislav Grof, M.D. in 1984, is a certified Holotropic Breathwork™ practitioner (1990), and was actively working with Grof as a senior trainer in the Grof Transpersonal Training from 1993-2000. She is the author of The Ethics of Caring: Finding Right Relationship with Clients, The Breathwork Experience, Considering Holotropic Breathwork®, and is editor of Exploring Holotropic Breathwork®. In the 1990s she frequently assisted Stanislav Grof and Jack Kornfield in Insight & Opening weeklong residential programs that combined Holotropic Breathwork® and Vipassana meditation. 📷Emma Knighton (she/they) is a white, queer, able-bodied femme. She is a somatic trauma therapist, psychedelic integration therapist, and embodied organizer. In their clinical work, Emma specializes in working with folks with complex PTSD from childhood abandonment, neglect, and sexual abuse. Her approach is grounded in queer, consent, and feminist theories and she works from an anti-oppression lens. They offer organizational training in trauma-informed care (TIC), promoting the integration of TIC principles into clinical care, employee relations, and corporate structure. Emma teaches classes on integrating kink-based consent practices into psychedelic-assisted therapy. Emma is passionate about embodied community and believes that psychedelic healthcare and policy/regulation must come from those who practice and those who benefit. She believes that integration is a life-long practice, and strives to live life with integrated spirit and body.
