Domestic Revolutions: Gay Family Life in Three Novels
By TPLCulture
Three novels explore contemporary gay life and explore the quiet and revolutionary way that queer families carve out their own rhythms to family life: both strikingly familiar and subversive.
Bryan Washington talks about his novel, Memorial, a funny and profound story about two young men living together in Houston as they settle into the rhythms of a long-term relationship that neither of them are sure they want. When circumstances force them to separate temporarily, with oceans in between them, their bond and all they know about each other is suddenly shaken. Will they change and become stronger as men and as a couple or will the bond that has long connected them be destroyed forever?
Kristen Arnett talks about her new novel, With Teeth, a surprising and moving story of two mothers, one difficult son, and the limitations of marriage, parenthood and love. Blending the warmth and wit of Arnett’s breakout hit, Mostly Dead Things, Arnett’s new book explores the different way we experience family life and no domestic life can ever be “fair and equal.” With Teeth is a thought-provoking portrait of the delicate fabric of family—and the many ways it can be torn apart.
Finally, Christopher DiRaddo talks about his latest novel, The Family Way, which explores the complex process that gay families go through to have children. As Paul and his group of chosen family around him approach middle age, Paul sets something in motion that will unravel for years into the future and impact everyone in different ways.
Bryan Washington, Kristen Arnett and Christopher DiRaddo talk with Jason Wagar about their novels which present domestic gay lives in all their complexity and variety.
