Out of the Archives: Pittsburgh Revealed 2020
By City of Asylum
(90 min run-time)
Out of the Archives: Pittsburgh Revealed is a unique selection of moving images created in or about the Pittsburgh region from the 1930s through the 1990s. This program has been carefully assembled to showcase overlooked films and videos and illuminate forgotten people and landscapes of the Pittsburgh region through collaborations with numerous institutional and personal archives in the area. Contributors will join curators Emily Davis and Steven Haines in a live talk-back following the screening.
View tonight's program here.
Some of this year’s highlights include the home movies of photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris, home-made commercials for queer-owned vintage shops, amateur footage of the 1959 MLB All-Star Game at Forbes Field on glorious Kodachrome, views of Kennywood that will leave you wondering if you're seeing double, and so much more. This celebration of the moving image is intended to honor the labor of our region’s archivists (professional and amateur), recognize the makers of otherwise overlooked works, and prompt the viewer to reconsider the very notion of the archive and what is worth saving.
Participating collections include: Pittsburgh Queer History Project, Teenie Harris Archive at the CMOA, Harriet Stein, Flea Market Films, Mark Comden, Detre Library and Archives at Heinz History Center, Orgone Archive, Zoltan Weslowski, and Seldom Seen Productions.
Curated by Emily Davis and Steven Haines
Emily Davis and Steven Haines met in 2016 through a mutual love of home movies and orphaned films. As members of the collective that organizes Pittsburgh’s annual Home Movie Day event, they are both passionate about rescuing films of all gauges and sizes, and sharing them with their communities. The duo started Out of the Archives in 2019 to showcase some of the rare film and video gems that go largely unseen by the broader community, to increase people’s awareness and appreciation of archival footage, and celebrate the labor of regional archivists, both professional and amateur.
