Did you know that for hundreds of years, it was legal—and even encouraged—to prevent Black people from owning homes? This process of exclusion, called redlining, persists today and impacts not only homeowners but also renters. This presentation examines the roots of housing discrimination targeting Black Americans and provides insight into impediments to fair housing across Maryland including local and statewide issues and resources. In addition, participants will be provided with information regarding filing charges of discrimination and local grassroots organizations working to end housing disparities.

This event is presented in partnership with the Worchester County Library, the Howard County Library System, and the Kent County Public Library.

This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Kara Hunt.

A Maryland native, Kara Hunt is the Director of Education & Outreach for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, a mediator, and a research enthusiast. Her graduate research was centered on the intersection of diversity, critical theory, and communication and she now applies that research to her current work in civil rights enforcement, education, and outreach.
