Ricky Romain began his Classical Indian musical study by becoming a residential pupil of Punita Gupta (a disciple of Ravi Shankar) in Southall London in 1972. From 1975-77 he continued to learn and refine technique under the supervisions of Bengali sitar player P. Gunguly. Ricky has performed regularly throughout the West Country, Nationally and in Europe since the early 1980’s. He has also been involved in a number of school and community arts projects using Indian Folk and Classical music as a focus for Inter- disciplinary study. For the last ten years he has been an associate lecturer in Indian classical music at the University of Plymouth. Ricky was a founder member of Jazz fusion group ‘Na-Da’ recording and co-writing with jazz saxophonist Tony Roberts the album ‘Breath of Fire’, and was also founder member of the world fusion band ‘Dhani’, recording the album ‘Between Two’. More recently, he has performed and recorded with tabla player Jon Sterckx producing two recordings, Raga Ahir Bhairav, and a live recording of Raga Kirvani.
