Standing on the Shoulders of Giants 2021: Eilean Ní Chuilleanain and Enda Wyley in conversation

The Bealtaine Festival with International Literature Festival Dublin present a reading by and a conversation between two leading Irish poets of different generations.
In this event both poets will read and discuss their work and reflect on their writing. Each will choose favourite poems to read from their own and each other’s work. These readings will lead to a conversation about making poems, writing and the writing life.
Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin was born in Cork City in 1942, educated there and at Oxford before spending her working life as an academic in Trinity College, Dublin. She has won the Patrick Kavanagh Award, the Irish Times Award for Poetry, the O’Shaughnessy Award of the Irish-American Cultural Institute which called her “among the very best poets of her generation”, and the International Griffin Poetry Prize. Her collections include Acts and Monuments, Site of Ambush (1975), The Second Voyage (1977, 1986), The Rose Geranium (1981), The Sun-fish and The Mother House (2019). Her Collected Poems was published in October 2020. She is a Fellow and Professor of English (Emerita) at Trinity College, Dublin and a member of Aosdána. She served as Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2016-2019.
Enda Wyley is a poet, children’s author and teacher. She was born in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin (1966) and currently lives in Dublin. She has published six collections of poetry with Dedalus Press including : Eating Baby Jesus, Socrates in the Garden and The Painter on his Bike. Her poetry has been widely broadcast, translated and anthologised including in The Harvard Anthology of Modern Irish Poetry (Belknap Press, 2010), The Wake Forest Book of Irish Women Poets (Wake Forest University Press, 2011) and Lines of Vision (The National Gallery of Ireland, 2014). She was the inaugural winner of the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize and a recipient of a Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship for her poetry. She is a member of Aosdána, the Irish affiliation of creative artists.
