The Book Keeper: A Memoir of Race, Love, and Legacy--A Conversation with Julia McKenzie Munemo and E.R. Anderson

Charis welcomes author Julia McKenzie Munemo for a conversation with Charis Circle Executive Director, E.R. Anderson about Munemo's timely memoir, The Book Keeper: A Memoir of Race, Love, and Legacy. Decades after Julia McKenzie Munemo’s father committed suicide, she learned that he made his living writing interracial pornography under pseudonym. She hid the stack of his old paperbacks from her Zimbabwean husband, their mixed-race children, and herself before realizing her obligation to understand her racial legacy. What, The Book Keeper asks, can racial progress possibly look like in a country where white liberals so willingly put on blinders every day? And how can she, as a mother of two black boys, ever make the world safer for her children, when so many white people refuse to look at their own family stories and legacies? In tracing her own journey from reckoning with to ownership of her family’s past, Munemo uses her uniquely and deeply felt personal story to bring larger cultural and historic threads to light with nuance and resonance.

Julia McKenzie Munemo works as the interim director of the Williams College Writing Center and as a writer for the Williams College Magazine. She teaches courses in creative nonfiction, including an undergraduate workshop for Williams’ Winter Study. The Book Keeper: A Memoir of Race, Love, and Legacy is her first book.
Executive Director, Errol "E.R." Anderson (pronouns: they/them or he/him) manages the programming, fiscal, and daily operations of Charis Circle, and is always interested in the ways our communities can share skills and resources. A native Atlantan, E.R. came to Charis as one of the founding members of the Young Writer's Group in 1997, and has enjoyed helping build connections between communities of activists, artists, and academics in this city ever since.
