Thad Ziolkowski knows this dynamic intimately. A lifelong surfer, he has been surrounded by addiction since his boyhood. Thad Ziolkowski is the author of the memoir On a Wave, which was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award in 2003, and Wichita, a novel. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Slate, Bookforum, Artforum, Travel & Leisure, and Interview Magazine. He has a PhD in English Literature from Yale University and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is the Associate Director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the Graduate Center, CUNY.

Karen Rinaldi is the publisher of Harper Wave, an imprint she founded in 2012, and a senior vice president at HarperCollins Publishers. She has worked in the publishing industry for over two decades as a publisher, editor, and content creator. Karen wrote the story for Maggie’s Plan, the 2015 film inspired by her novel, The End of Men. She is also the author of It’s Great to Suck at Something and her non-fiction work has appeared in The New York Times, Oprah.com, Time/Motto among others. She lives in New York City.
