The Political Ecology of Basic Income in Canada: Communication workshop for advocates to get the word out

By The BIG Conference

This workshop for advocates will be delivered by people in organizations who have analyzed trends in feedback from supporters and trends in the media and public more broadly. They have developed ideas, training and tools for responding in constructive ways to support the basic income movement. Basic income, in particular through bills in the Senate and House, has become a target of organized opposition based on disinformation and fear that seems to be escalating. This is new and different than addressing legitimate differences of perspective or gaps in information with which we have traditionally been engaged.
Speakers
Tim Ellis
Tim's eclectic background has included careers as a rave DJ, farm hand, freelance writer, gym technician, bond market analyst, and most recently as a digital organizer and campaign manager. An immigrant from the US who has lived in Canada since 2012, Tim has brought his jack-of-all-trades approach to the progressive movement since taking a job as part of the NH persuasion and deep canvassing team with the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016, where he went on to serve on field operations in six states. From there, he served as the lead coordinator for the “Rock Against the TPP” international concert series, campaign manager for local and state senate candidates, union organizer for OPSEU, digital field director for an NDP federal party leadership candidate, and returned to the campaign trail with Bernie’s New Hampshire persuasion team in 2020. Most recently, Tim organized the Not One Seat campaign in Ontario, developing and deploying an innovative, open-source, grassroots model that was able to quickly scale up in just six weeks to a full field operation, and pioneered a uniquely scalable social media amplification effort alongside on-the-ground organizing. Now, as an organizer with Leadnow, Tim is focused on empowering people to engage with our democracy, using cutting-edge technology blended with tried-and-tested organizing tactics. Tim’s work at Leadnow has included some of Canada’s largest and most innovative campaigns and organizing tactics. Tim is also involved in supporting data work for progressive primaries back Stateside, and - as part of the leadership of Democrats Abroad Canada and an elected Sanders delegate to the DNC - was part of the Democrats' GOTV efforts to defeat Donald Trump in 2020.
