To Serverless or Not - Pros and Cons of Going Serverless

During this joint meetup we will discuss Watson Natural Language Analyzer API & Ruby SDK on one hand, and about Mobile Backend as a Service on another. You will explore situations when your app requires extra information like Social Media input/output, a call to RESTful APIs, or simply Cloud based AI like IBM Watson. There is a well established practice of spinning services in a cloud, but a new serverless tactic is emerging!
During this online meetup you will discover a small Rails app that uses both the Watson Natural Language Analyzer API and the Nexmo Messages API to analyze the tone and sentiment of the daily headlines in a news topic the user provides and send a WhatsApp summary message to their phone number.
In addition you will learn also about the serverless functions. We will also go over why, when, and how to implement the Serverless backend. Lastly, you will learn about a new effective style of cloud native programming using Apache OpenWhisk.
The speakers are:
Ben Greenberg - Ben is a second career developer who previously spent a decade in the fields of adult education, community organizing and non-profit management. He works as a developer advocate for Nexmo, the Vonage API Platform by day and experiments with open source projects at night. He writes regularly on the intersection of community development and tech. Originally from Southern California and a long time resident of New York City, Ben now resides near Tel Aviv in Israel.
Marek Sadowski - Marek is a full stack developer advocate, a robotics startup founder and an entrepreneur. He has about 20 year experience in consulting largest enterprises in USA, Europe, Middle East and Africa. As a graduate from the International Space University Marek pioneered in a research on VR goggles for the virtual reality system to control robots on Mars in NASA Ames. He founded a startup to deliver robotics solutions and services for industries. Marek moved to Silicon Valley to promote IoT, robotics, serverless, and container solutions driven by AI, APIs, and Cloud Native.
