When we look at the food at our local grocery stores, do they reflect the diversity of the people in the city?

Toronto-based chef, Bashir Munye believes that to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism and for people to achieve food sovereignty is for access to food that is culturally appropriate and produced through sustainable methods.

Born in Somalia and raised in Italy, Chef Bashir is inspired by global cuisine and Nomadic Comfort Food is the culinary definition Bashir uses to describe his identity as a Somali person and the heritage of the nomadic history of his community.

From Mogadishu to Bahia, African food is diverse and dynamic and relevant as any other cuisines on the culinary world stage. Chef Bashir will prepare a dish that is seasonally inspired, farm to table, wholesome and nutrient-dense while discussing how food not only nourishes the body but is also a tool for identity, self-determination and resilience.

Chef Basir will also be in conversation with Idil Farah, a nutritionist passionate about holistic ways of healing with cultural foods and using your kitchen as your 'farmacy'.

Presented also in celebration of Earth Month as part of Toronto Public Library's Our Fragile Planet program series, supported by TD Friends of the Environment (TD FEF).
