Nahid Shahalimi: We Are Still Here
By TPLCulture
Afghan-Canadian activist, filmmaker, artist and author Nahid Shahalimi shares her new book We Are Still Here: Afghan Women on Courage, Freedom, and the Fight to Be Heard with host Sally Armstrong.
One year after the fall of Kabul and the return to power by the Taliban, Afghan women and girls face a total loss of their human rights and personal freedoms. Author and activist Nahid Shahalimi was born in Afghanistan and left with her family when she was young to begin a new life in Canada. She has dedicated her life to supporting Afghan women and girls for over two decades and in 2011 Nahid began traveling across Afghanistan to collect stories of hope and courage from women who are remarkable examples of resilience. She has collected these stories in her new book We Are Still Here: Afghan Women on Courage, Freedom, and the Fight to Be Heard.
In this special event, Nahid Shahalimi is joined by two contributors to the book: Mina Sharif, executive TV producer and cofounder of a youth mentoring program in Afghanistan; and Mariam Safi, who founded the Organization for Policy Research and Development Studies, a Kabul-based institute for research, community development, and women’s empowerment. Together they will reflect on their country's past, stories of their own upbringing and the ways they have been able to empower girls and women over the past two decades.
