Laughter and Resilience: Indigenous Comedy Panel

Amidst a legacy of trauma, Indigenous communities across Turtle Island have often shielded themselves with comedy as a means to survive the harsh realities of colonialism. In the new book We Had a Little Real Estate Problem - The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy author Kliph Nesteroff explores the rich history of Indigenous comedy across Turtle Island.
Reaching as far back as the forced participation of Indigenous people in the “wild west” shows of the 1880s and into the rise of seminal Oneida comedian Charlie Hill in the 1970s, the book combines research and first-hand accounts from Indigenous comics to paint a full and complex portrait.
In this special panel discussion, we gather three top Indigenous comedians to sit with Kliph Nesteroff to discuss the deep connection between comedy and tragedy and the power of humour to uplift and educate.
