You Are the Dream: Writers in Conversation

By TPLCulture

A captivating conversation featuring three novelists whose work explore narratives - both historical and modern - that are funny, moving and relevant.
Jayne Allen talks about Black Girls Must Die Exhausted, her first novel in a three-book series about modern womanhood in which a young Black woman must rely on courage, laughter, and love—and the support of her two longtime friends—to overcome an unexpected setback that threatens the most precious thing she's ever wanted. Kaitlyn Greenidge presents her novel, Libertie, and her eponymous character in an unforgettable story about one young Black girl’s attempt to find a place where she can be herself in a Reconstruction-era Brooklyn. Inspired by the life of one of the first Black female doctors Greenidge’s novel will resonate with readers eager to understand our present through a deep dive into our complicated past. Myriam Chancy discusses her novel, What Storm What Thunder, where she charts the inner lives of a cast of characters affected after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shakes Port-au-Prince, Haiti and all the tragic repercussions. This gripping story gives witness to the desolation wreaked by nature and the human impulse to survive.
Jayne Allen, Kailtyn Greenidge and Myriam Chancy talk to Author and Founder of Well-Read Black Girl , Glory Edim (On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library) about their new novels and the complex lives they portray across a spectrum of settings.
