Government plans to implement a phased return of fans to live sports were shelved at the end of September. And, in the midst of an ongoing second wave of Coronavirus, officials from the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) have told governing bodies not to expect fans back until the end of winter.
But for countless sports teams up and down the country, the loss of gate receipts from games behind closed doors could be catastrophic.
It is thought that English Football League (EFL) clubs lost £50m in gate receipts at the end of last season and estimate a £200m loss if there are no fans this season.
For many clubs, such a scenario would likely be financially ruinous.
What steps are the EFL taking to tackle this unprecedented situation? How might Covid-safe technology be implemented at matchday venues to ensure a safe return of fans? What other risk factors might governing bodies, leagues, and clubs have to consider?
Joining host Dr Rob Wilson to discuss this is:
  • Rick Parry, Chairman of the English Football League
  • Botan Osman, CEO of Restrata
  • Professor James Calder, Member of the UK Government's Sports Technology and Innovation Group
